About us

Geelen Counterflow is the inventor and global market leader of counterflow coolers and dryers.

Our coolers and dryers offer the highest food safety standards, energy efficiency, and the lowest Total Cost of Ownership for the food industry. The counterflow cooler has become the global standard for cooling granular feed and food products from pellet presses, flake rollers, extruders, conditioners, and expanders.

We have 5 product groups of counterflow coolers, each available in multiple sizes and with a wide range of options. The counterflow principle makes better use of cooling air, resulting in lower energy consumption, reduced space requirements, and less maintenance. PLC control of the cooling air volume results in more accurate and uniform cooling, whether the cooler is full or nearly empty. Condensation is avoided, which is essential to prevent microbiological contamination. Vertical product transport without horizontal surfaces means less risk of product buildup or drag.

Gas or steam dryers consume more than 50% of the total thermal energy of a typical extrusion line. Counterflow dryers save energy and space in the factory compared to other types of dryers. The vertical design utilizes gravity for product transport. The absence of horizontal surfaces prevents dragging. The risk of dust buildup can be minimized. Cleaning frequency is lower and cleaning is faster than with horizontal dryers. Batch dryers enable rapid switching between different products without waiting for the dryer to empty. Even exposure of the product to warm drying air leads to high moisture uniformity. Variation in layer thickness and the number of beds allows for shorter or longer drying times. Recovery of latent heat from the exhaust air, in combination with a heat pump, enables a reduction of 60-75% in thermal energy consumption. Partial or full electrification is possible, as well as a step-by-step switch from gas burners to heat pumps. Counterflow Remote Diagnostics provides the plant with feedback on potential efficiency improvements.
